Third lecture in the Voices from the Vanguard series.Park came to the CDC in 2002 expecting to track life-threatening fungal infections mainly in places where HIV/AIDS breaks down resistance to fungal pathogens, or in trauma patients where sudden, flesh-eating fungus infections destroy limbs and life in a matter of days. What he did not anticipate was leading the epidemiologic investigation into puzzling cases of fungal meningitis that cropped up in several states last October. He and his colleagues quickly traced the outbreak to contaminated steroid medication from the New England Compounding Center just outside Boston. Learn the story from a disease detective on the scene. The Voices from the Vanguard Lecture Series is a joint effort of Grady College's Health and Medical Journalism program and the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases. The series concludes on April 8 with Carol Etherington, MSN, RN from Vanderbilt University Institute for Global Health.News release: http://news.uga.edu/releases/article/cdc-fungal-meningitis-investigator-next-up-in-voices-from-the-vanguard/
