Salsa, Cha-Cha-Cha, Afro Cuban Workshops @ Omni Club of Athens***Beginners welcome & No partner necessary***1-2 PM: Cha-Cha-Cha Basic Workshop - Renate Dugans & Steve Reed (SALSAtlanta) Expand your dance skill set by learning the basics to Cha-Cha-Cha! This 1-hour workshop will cover understanding CCC rhythm and basic footwork and partner-work patterns – all of which will add to your versatility as a dancer!! Steve and Renate have been active as Group Fitness (GF) Instructors for over 10 years. They have distinguished backgrounds not only as GF instructors but also in athletics and are instructors and performers with SALSAtlanta. 2-3 PM: Basic/Beginner Salsa Steps + Casino Rueda Workshop - Gwyneth Moody (SALSAthens) Get ready to learn the basic steps of salsa dancing and the special Cuban dance formation of Rueda de Casino (in Spanish the word Rueda=Wheel). This dance originated and evolved during the late 1940's and the 1950's in Havana Cuba, and later, Miami, when Cuban emigrants who brought their music and customs to the United States-- into breathtaking combinations of spins and footwork. One couple may dance the steps alone, but the dance is best viewed with several couples dancing in a circle. Beginners are welcome in this fun and easy 1-hour workshop and no partner is necessary. This is great for those who claim to have "2 left feet" and also for those who would like a review of basic salsa steps. Gwyneth leads the SALSAthens dance group in Athens, Georgia. 3-4 PM: Casino Rueda: Technique Tune-up Workshop - Julian Mejia (SALSAtlanta) Need a Casino/Rueda technique tune-up? Here's your chance to make your Rueda/Casino movements crisp and graceful. Learn about the importance of footwork, marking the accents in moves, hand connection with your partner, and being safe on the dance floor to minimize injury. Julián Mejía studied Casino-style Salsa in Miami, where Casino Salsa is king. He began teaching Casino-style Salsa when he moved to Atlanta in July of 1999; SALSAthens and SALSAtlanta grew out of these classes. SALSAthens and SALSAtlanta are groups dedicated to dancing a particular style of Salsa known as Rueda de Casino (see description above). 4-5 PM: Afro Cuban Dance Workshop - Charisse Williams This 1 hour Afro-Cuban dance workshop will focus on the dance style of Rumba and will also provide exposure to some of the other styles including Orisha, Palo and Arara dance, covering technique, songs and cultural context. This will be a fun energetic workshop delving into a richly colorful side of Latin dance. Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary. Charisse has over 15 years experience studying, performing and teaching dances from the African Diaspora.Participants can wear long skirt (women) or bring scarf (men). 5-6 PM: Casino Rueda: Tightening Up Alarde, Gancho, and Looped/Knotted Moves Workshop - Julian Mejia (SALSAtlanta) Learn how to execute moves with alternating ganchos and alardes and arm-twisting moves with grace and ease so that your partner doesn’t feel pulled, yanked and pushed.
