5:30 pm Lamar Dodd School of Art S151 Sponsored by: Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, Lamar Dodd School of Art Contact: artinfo@uga.edu 706-542-1511 Speaker: Michael Rooks, Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum of Art.Rooks is also Commissioner of the U.S. Pavilion at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. Prior to joining the High Museum in 2010, Rooks held curator positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Contemporary Museum Honolulu, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. At Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Rooks curated numerous monographic exhibitions including Roy Lichtenstein: Interiors and H. C. Westermann for which he co-authored Westermann’s catalogue raisonné. MCA exhibitions included solo shows and artist book projects by Gregg Bordowitz and AA Bronson. His thematic exhibitions at MCA include the first major response to the Iraq war in 2003 titled War What Is It Good For? As curator at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu Rooks initiated Hawaii’s first international artist project series with major outdoor works by Taiwanese artist Michael Lin and British artist Paul Morrison, and Rooks introduced new artists to the state of Hawaii through original and traveling exhibitions. Exhibitions that Rooks has co-organized or curated at the High Museum of Art have included Surrealist Conspiracy, Trading Places: Selection from the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine, Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters, KAWS: DOWN TIME, and Alejandro Aguilera: About the Modern Spirit. Forthcoming exhibitions at the High Museum in 2012 include Aaron Curry: Wrong Spelled Wrong, Susan Cofer: Draw Near, and Fast Forward: Modern Moments 1913>>2013 which include three contemporary installations by Aaron Curry, Katharina Grosse, and Sarah Sze.This lecture is part of the Lamar Dodd School of Art's 2012-2013 Visiting Artist and Scholar Series.
